QUEST · Game Dev
canalmonster.studio
The studio's website is also its first project: a continuation of the pixel-art world from jkri.ch, moved a couple of miles south-east to the bank of the Gowanus Canal.
Features
- A tile factory with a rooftop sign, the Smith–9th Sts viaduct, Lower Manhattan and the canal, all drawn in code with no image files
- Scrolling moves the time of day from morning to night, and each window lights up on its own schedule
- The moon is in its real phase, the season matches New York's, and the clock shows Gowanus time
- F and G trains that stop at Smith–9th Sts (doors, ding-dong and all), an egret on the pilings, the Gowanus Dredgers out paddling, and something in the water
- An explorable cut-away of the studio with a working laser, printer and a tiny game on the monitor
- Ten achievements, a pause menu, at least one cheat code, and chiptune sound effects over the hum of the Gowanus
Stack
Astro for the pages and Markdown content, TypeScript and the Canvas 2D API for everything that moves. The full write-up is in How the Gowanus on this site works.
